Completed the EV Quartet

Post by Jelle v/d Meer » Sat Aug 01, 2020 10:17 pm

During my 2nd charging stop today I completed the non Tesla Luxury EV quartet :D

When I arrived there were 2 ICE cars and a bus parked at the Weiskirchen (Rodgau) Ionity station but luckily the 2 ICE cars moved away after I friendly  asked them to move - the bus after repeated request moved as well.
About 10 minutes after my arrival a German Porsche Tycan arrived (smaller battery version) - driven by someone that had it on test loan for the weekend.
After a further 5 minutes a Mercedes EQC arrived - driven by a Mercedes test person who the whole time I was there couldn't charge because Mercedes sent him testing without RFID cards and told him to just download the Ionity app - he seemed unsuccessfully setting up his credit card in the Ionity App.
Shortly after the Mercedes EQC an Audi E-tron 50 arrived and with that all 4 Ionity chargers were occupied. Weirdly on this Black Saturday at my 1st (Bad Honnef), 3rd (Neumarkt) and 4th (Passau) charging stop I was the only car charging the entire time.

See below the 2 pictures taken - the Porsche was in special wrap.

That’s an awesome photo op! I’m jealous! That would have gone straight on my Twitter! Not sure about the wrap, but obviously done for promotional purposes. Don’t imagine those 4 vehicles have been seen together too often!

This is actually a picture of the current luxury EV cars out there as Teslas are not luxury cars. Premium, maybe, luxury, no.

Also the I-Pace is the best colour it can be which is the Caesium Blue.

 True. Expensive and luxury are not necessarily the same thing.

Try telling that to a top spec Tesla Model S which costs £108k and is still not a luxury car.

Wait, I can see the Tesla fan boys with pitch forks coming for me.

What about the fake chrome bits on the back of the EQC where the exhausts would normally be?
MB missed a trick there. They should have not put any chrome there. That would have made the car stand out a lot more.
Driving "Hirundo Rustica" since 15th Mar 2019. Lovely Jubbly :D :D

The fake chrome is because the EQC is not actually an EV from the ground up, it an multipurpose platform which can be ICE, hybrid or BEV. So they had to do something with that designed queue which is a bang over form it’s ICE variant. The E-Tron is the same even though Audi was showing concepts of the car since 2015.

The I-Pace and Taycan are the only cars designed from the ground up to be EV and so don’t have quirky ICE characterises.

I personally like the rear of the I-Pace out of all of those cars because it’s significantly different to all the other ICE cars that JLR produce. It’s a BEV with no shared design hangover from the other JLR cars.

Where as E-Tron and EQC are trying too hard not to be solely electric cars, they are just cars that happen to have electric drive train. Which some will argue should be the case and I understand that. It’s just I personally think an electric car is free from certain designed requirements so why not use that freedom to design alternatives.
