What is the status of 100kW charging?

Post by DougTheMac » Mon Jan 14, 2019 9:02 pm

There has been a lot of discussion on this forum about 100kW charging, but it’s difficult to know what the current (!) status is; and you can’t search for “100 kW”...

As far as I am aware from reading lots of posts over the last few months, it seems that many of you have charged at around 80kW, but there is some sort of limit of 200A, but I’m not clear whether this is a limit of the car or the charger. Much talk of software updates promising 100kW charging. Mention of needing water-cooled cables on the charger. And lots of talk of problems with chargers generally.

There was a video posted recently (which I can no longer find) showing someone getting 97kW from a Honda charger - but it seemed to taper off very rapidly to c80kW at c25% SoC (all these figures from memory).

So, my question to current owners who have access to super-rapid chargers which should be capable of 100kW or more, is:

“What sustained charging rate can you routinely achieve, between, say 20% and 70% SoC?” Or, perhaps more usefully, how fast have you managed to recharge from 20% to 80% SoC?

By the nature of these forums, there are more posts reporting problems than successes. So please don’t use this thread to report specific issues such as cutting out after a few minutes or being unable to charge at more than 30kW. I’m trying to establish what is routinely possible when everything is working as it should.

I have succesfully charged at Fastned, Ionity, E-ON and Allego chargers (all at least 150kWh), all around 85kWh between 15% and 75% state of charge. Note these are rough estimates. InControl app reported 100% charge per hour.

A group of Dutch owners just had a meeting with JLR NL. JLR is currently dealing with all chargeproviders (like Allego, ABB, etc) to rise the output amperage. Because the car is not suitable for higher voltages the only way is to have more amperage. However the hardware of the charging stations have to be updated. After that, a new telematics update (not OTA but through dealer) will facilitate the 'new' communication between car and charging point and then 100kw will be possible. The update is expected in about 2 or 3 weeks from now.

So the hardware of fastchargers all over the world needs to be modified just for the I-PACE? Why is it then that the Audi e-Tron smoothly handles 155 kW charging?

That’ll be the Audi eTron that hasn’t actually been released yet?

That E-tron keeps getting better and the I-pace keeps getting worse.

I-pace charges at approx avg 80kW per hour till 55% to then drop off gradually to 50kW at 80% and 35kW at 90%
E-tron charges at approx avg 145kW per hour till 80% to then drop down quickly but still is above 80kW at 90%

Based on above in pretty much all situations the I-pace takes TWICE as long to charge and I wouldn't be surprissed if E-tron gets to 90% or better of the real world range as the I-pace. Add to that standard 3 phase AC charging and the benefit of an AC charger port on either side of the car and Audi EASILY wins the practicality match from Jaguar.
