Rapid Charging/Door Opening Question

Post by 2-BEV » Thu Apr 29, 2021 10:27 am

A bit of a daft question a but what are the rules on opening the car doors whilst charging is in progress?
We had cause to carry out some en-route charging yesterday for a 550 mile round trip. We naively thought that we could get out of the car once the charge had started. The inevitable happened, with my wife opening the passenger door and charging stopped. Worst of all, we didn't notice at first so I had to go through the charging setup again. That was at MFG Crow Orchard. We now know.
At another location, Osprey Worcester, I was able to get in and out of the car and yet charging continued until I stopped the charge at the charger.
It doesn't make sense as to why opening the door should cancel a charge.
Under normal, non Covid times, it wouldn't be a problem, as the ideal scenario would be that all occupants are out of the car whilst charging is in progress. Car would be locked and occupants can go and enjoy a coffee and comfort break only to return when the charge has reached the desired level. Unfortunately, that is not an option at the moment.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

With mine you certainly can get in and out when rapid charging, even lock and unlock the doors, I’m not so sure when charging at home, so when I plug in I lock it and leave it alone. There does seem to be a big variation how the cars behave

I haven’t had that happen - which doesn’t mean it won’t! I have owned a Morgan for many years - the Jag is another car where you learn to live with its foibles.. Morgan owners call it “character” .. not sure what iPace owners call it.

I have charged mine at a free ENGIE charger and been in and out of it, locked and unlocked it and even pressed the start to get the heaters on whilst sat in it charging, none of which interfered with the charging process.

Charging continues even if opening doors or a trunk/frunk without using a remote. If you open the trunk/frunk or unlock doors with the remote, charging stops. If it AC charge, it continues after short time but DC charge need restarting it because most of DC chargers stops when they got a signal from the car that charging has ended.

Hello all,

"The inevitable happened, with my wife opening the passenger door and charging stopped": yes, same for me. I suspect a MY21 specific issue. Worst of all is that, when charge stops, I can't just resume it, I have to make the car run one meter backward then forward, because; if not, the charging keeps initializing forever. I just reported that problem to my dealer. He looked as if he was aware of something he wouldn't tell. He told me he would ask the "specialists". Hummm....

Probably that he hadn't a clue what you were talking about! :(

Thanks for that SmartMarc, I'm glad it's not just me then. Now that I know it's a "feature" of MY21 vehicles, I can work around it.
It's a bit ironic really for MY21, as they've taken the trouble of adding the magic button to release the charging plug.

I have an MY21 as well and it stops charging if you open either of the front doors while connected to a rapid charger.
The charging process then has to be restarted since the car doesn’t successfully initialize after closing the door.
Have you tried turning off the Infotainment system completely before opening the door?
There is no logic to this characteristic, either you stop charging by pressing the release button or at the charger.

Can I query your definition of "rapid charger"?

I don't ever seen to have an issue on 50Kwh chargers but anything with higher charge rate seems to get a bit more sensitive.
