Extended Rear Facing Seat

Post by rcoundon » Fri Jan 08, 2021 6:57 pm

Hi - does anyone have any recommendations for an extended rear facing car seat for kids? These are the seats that allow kids to sit facing backwards for longer than the standard ones but there aren't a lot on the market - they typically cater for kids from about 9kg up to 25kg

We have a Britax MaxWay Plus that I used to use in my Passat GTE. The tether straps need to either attach to the rails underneath the front seat or wrap around the back of the front seat. In the Passat I could use the rails, in the i-pace there's no gap under the seat rails so I've found I have to loop them around the seat. This isn't ideal for a few reasons - readjusting every time the seat changes position, wearing the leather of the front seat out, probably less comfortable for the passenger in the front seat.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

Thanks
Ross

Hi rcoundon

I have bought both of our ERF seats from this website (they ship across Europe):
https://www.carseat.se/
https://www.carseat.se/shop/

They specialize in this kind of seats so you'll find a pretty wide selection and good information and descriptions. There's also a filter for Isofix, if you feel this is more flexible/convenient in terms of installation.

//edit: Also, just as an FYI, I also couldn't fit the tether straps under the rails in my X3. That's why I made two metal plates with holes, I unscrewed the back side of the rail and screwed the one side of the plate under it. On the other side/hole, I inserted a carabiner (one on each side) and that's where I tether the belts.

I'll take a look but because the UK has committed economic suicide, they may no longer be shipping to the UK :-(

That's an excellent idea - what thickness plates could you fit underneath?

Depending on what age your looking for.
0-4 years we used the goodbaby vaya https://pricespy.co.uk/kids-family/baby ... --p4431311

It was very good. It’s rather heavy so I wouldn’t want to switch it on a regular basis between two cars.
I used this in my 5 series. You can turn the seat around, that’s helpful.

Thank you for sharing - we're looking for up to 25kg and it seems like the only options are those with floor or front seat tethers.

I think mine are 3mm, but that's probably overkill.

Look at this though:
https://www.carseat.se/product/tether-loops-long/

These might fit. When I was looking for loops, only these were available:
https://www.carseat.se/product/tether-loops/

But those were too short for me, so I ended up making my own. However the long ones would fit, I think. If they were available at the moment, I'd have bought them instead of making them.

P.S. As is shown in the pics, I've placed the loops below the screw but above the rail, not below the rail. So I just removed the screw and placed the loops. The screw was long enough so I don't think a few mm would create any problems.

Perfect, sounds like a plan. Thank-you

Just had a chat with my son.
They bought Cybex, and were impressed.
