Octopus Energy - cheap overnight charging

Hi all

If anyone’s energy tariff is up for renewal soon, I’ve just switched to Octopus Energy - the standard unit rate was cheaper pkwh than my current supplier as it is, but the Go tariff also offers 5p pkwh between 12:30-4:30am.

Also if you sign up via the link below, we both get £50 I’m pretty annoyed because I saw a referral link on this forum AFTER I’d switched, gutted!

Isn't the unit rate very high for Octopus outside the off peak period? My standard unit rate is 12.9p (I don't have any off peak at the moment) but with Octopus peak it was something like 19p.

I won't be doing anything like enough charging at home to make that pay.

How does your usage balance between car and other electricity use?

I genuinely have no idea about mine as a new owner but would expect it to be a small fraction of my total electricity use.

I'm seriously considering the EDF GoElectric tariff. The overnight rate is a bit higher at 8p per unit, but it's for 10 hours a night rather than just 4, and it's also applicable all weekend. It ends up being 8p for 98 hours out of a 168 hour week.

Also, another question: If you have the car preferring charging for an overnight period from 9pm-7am, and you set a departure time for say 9am, does it still precondition both the battery and the climate after 7am? How would it behave?

I just got a quote and it says; Unit rate 16.0125p?

We use around 4500 kWh for the home and estimate 430kWh/1000 miles for the car (incl losses and 200 miles/full charge)

So say we do around 10,000 miles per year, it almost doubles out electricity consumption. Assuming all home charged.

We have two EVs, so we have more to gain, plus we time everything else to go during the cheap hours where possible.

My spreadsheet tells me it's the cheapest tarriff for us, but that's probably not the case for everyone - we've saved about £45.00 from the begining of July to the end of September, against what our old tarriff would have cost us.

For most EV owners the cheapest would be Octopus Agile where low rate is 7 pm onwards rate varies from day to day but charging an EV will average 6 or 7p a KWH. An IPace is going to take 12hours to fully charge so you do need the longest period, peak rate is 4pm to 7pm if your household can avoid that period you will save a lot, for me I have added an EV and it has reduced my bill.
You need to sign up to an Octopus tariff then ask to change to Agile, if they can communicate with your smart meter they will swap over. I have to say Octopus is the easiest energy company I have dealt with very efficient and quick

IT seems that their quote system can't quote you for the dual rate GoElectric Tariff. To me that is a showstopper. mind you they aren't alone in that the quote system can't or won't quote you the best tariff. They seem to be relying on you the customer to call them up to switch to the best tariff. EDF have a hefty exit fee as well.
