My21 Steering Assist

Post by ACB5 » Mon Sep 14, 2020 7:22 pm

I am new to the forum having placed an order for a MY21 in early July so hoping for delivery some time in October!!!. I am coming from a Volvo T8. I thought to while away the days I would check the differences between the MY20 and MY21 as the manuals and brochures are now out.
Besides the obvious touchscreen for Pivi differences the main ones I can see are a release button in the charging port, brake hold has an on demand function to hold on any gradient and a dynamic-i screen with g force monitor. The main difference though is there is no section in the new manual for steering assist. I have checked the new brochure and the section about steering assist has been removed and the photo on that page is the same photo as the MY20 brochure except the green steering wheel showing steering assist is working has been edited out. Does this mean that steering assist is not going to be offered on the new model year, if so this ought to have been identified as it was one of the main reasons to go for the HSE spec. It might be that the software is not ready and will be added later but worried this is being removed. LKA is still there so surely the software for steering assist cannot be that different.

Ahahah, welcome my friend:

I got in touch with JLR Italy and they admit they could not give an answer they can sure about. I'm not too bothered as my company is paying for all safety features so I'm getting the driver assist in any case but I find quite strange that even the company building the car is insure about its product characteristics.

I wouldn't fret about not having steering assist!

If the road markings are in pristine conditions, it works. But if they are not, it works for most of the time and then suddenly it doesn't. No indication, no beeps or warning lights when it disengages - just a sudden drift towards the kerb or central reservation.

You have to be on full alert to catch it - which begs the question - if you're on full alert, why do you need steering assist anyway?

I rarely switch it on anymore.

I use it all the time on motorways, dual carriageways etc, its very good, but never use it on country lanes or minor roads. Yes the road markings/lines have to be in reasonable condition, but on the major roads it is definitely a useful feature to have IMHO

This is my experience also. Works extremely well on motorways and dual carriageways, which is what it’s really intended for. I have very few disconnects on motorways. If you are behind another car and it loses the lines, it will actually track that car instead. Personally, I find it incredibly useful on long journeys where it massively reduces the fatigue.

I agree with both the above. I was surprised how helpfull this and the ACC are to a restfull journey on motorways. Best to cancel the Steering assist before cancelling ACC though.

I too enjoy steering assist especially on motorways. Much less stressful journey.

Had four separate journeys on the Motorway today, used steering assist and ACC all the way on each journey, would really miss it now if I didn't have it.

My Volvo T8 has pilot assist and it works really well on long journeys, I have to say it is a bonus. As noted it does not work well on minor roads but that's not what it is intended to be used for.
I might contact the dealers to find out if they know anything. Does anyone know when MY21 model years will begin shipping, it must be soon.
