Data-SIM or phone's hotpot?

Post by EV i fi » Fri Jul 31, 2020 9:25 am

I took the Ubigi SIM out of my iPace yesterday as the pre-loaded data was used up. The car still seemed to be trying to use data for Sat Nav, causing long delays, essentially rendering it unusable.

With the SIM removed and the car connected to my phones wifi hotspot, SatNav worked fine, though I'm not sure if traffic info was live.

I turned on "satellite view" for one leg of the journey and was surprised how little data it used when I checked on the phone (I had expected it to be data hungry).

Is there any point getting a Data-SIM if no one else in the car needs wifi? I suppose it saves on phone data use and avoids having to connect hotspot (which is usually automatic anyway).

So what is everyone else using?

Thanks

Data SIM here. It costs me £2 a month to add one to my existing subscription and it saves me the hassle of having to fiddle with my phone every time I get in the car. My phone subscription actually gives me one data SIM for free but I already use that in my laptop, so I had to order another.

Thanks.

Which network is that?

It's a Norwegian carrier and I don't know where you're residing. However, I'm sure it's possible to get an additional data-SIM linked to your existing account. It will then share the data quota along with your primary SIM.

Good idea- I'll look into that.

I have a virgin mobile unlimited data sim, unfortunately the car doesn't like it, nor does it like my EE sim with 30gb on, had to book it in to get the sim replaced or looked at.

Sometimes you need to put the sim in a phone first to activate it, then transfer it to the car. Could that be the issue?

Nope, sim works fine in phone or Wi-Fi dongle, car still says no. Plus car has used over a gig on the ubigi sim despite it showing as no signal or on Wi-Fi all day!

This is something I’ve seen also. A few times I’ve had it show the “no signal” icon on the screen, but satellite imagery loads so it must actually be connected. It’s a weird thing and I thought it was just me!

The “phone first” suggestion was just an idea. Obviously not where your problem is.

It’s booked in for jag too look, though it wouldn’t stay connected to Wi-Fi either.
I loaded 1 gig to the ubigi sim and connected the car via Wi-Fi to my phone as I have unlimited data, the car only seems to stay connected to Wi-Fi for 1 hour ish then it drops Wi-Fi .

Though one other thing I don’t get is how a 24 gb three sim has lasted me 13 months and still had just over a gig, yet the ubigi sim seems to eat data for breakfast, 1 gb in a day is not funny lol
