This 320hp I-Pace makes sense, if the price tag is below the limits to get a governance credit for BEV like many countries currently have. Here in Germany the current I-Pace model S (400hp) is already just below the 65.000 EUR limit (before sales tax) to be entitled for 7.500 EUR credit! So this 320hp I-Pace might be targeted for markets, that have a lower limit for a govermamce cerdit for BEV.

If I was in Jaguar marketing.
I’d bring out a sub £50k “s” I-PACE to compete with the polestar 2, mustang e and Tesla model 3. I might try and get away with 75kWh battery. The weight decrease might retain a 200 mile range.
I’d drop the 90kWh “S” and chuck a load of optional extras as standard on the SE and HSE
That way I’d try not P off too many existing owners

Unfortunately the I-PACE Is now about £15-£20K too expensive (and that is reflected by the deals Jaguar has obviously made with the lease companies). I’ve paid less for the lease on my I-PACE than the depreciation would have been. Someone is getting a big discount and it’s not UK retail customers. The US dealers seem to have been selling I-PACE very cheaply with at least $20k off.

Is this Jaguar's answer to the forthcoming Tesla Model Y?
The spec is remarkably similar to one of the Model Y variants.

This is very interesting. I am all but convinced there will be an SVR variant with more power (whatever they say... ) But I hadn't considered there being a slower one.. I'd be glad in a way if that was what happened, it would allow us early adopters a brief period of time to feel smug in the faster cars - even if only until the SVR comes out!

Not sure I get the appeal of lesser powered i-pace though. I suppose for the autonomous car and taxi projects it makes sense, as neither of those have any need whatsoever for 400hp. But then again, they don't need more than 200hp really, so this still seems odd.

I also would be amazed (assuming this car is to be launched) if it didn't have reduced battery capacity. It's going to have to be cheaper to justify the power drop but in reality I doubt turning the motors down a little will save JLR a penny - the obvious cost saving ala Tesla is no reduce the number of cells. Even with cost saving, I can't see it getting down to Model Y pricing - not unless Jaguar strip out so much kit that it's no longer very 'Jaguar'.

I'll await more news with great interest :)

It would be interesting if Jaguar removed the second motor and reduced the power output to save the weight and increase the range. I don't know if that works and how much range it would add, but the range stats would be better and closer to the rivals.

Would reducing the battery to something close to 75-80kWh make the car cheaper and with comparable longer range? Also removing the front motor would increase the froot space and reduce the turning circle??

It would help the stats game with other EVs, but I guess it will also take away from the whole experience of a "Jaaaaggg".

Well, they've put a 4-pot engine in the F-Type so they have form in that area .... ;)

If the 320hp car was a single 320hp motor on just the rear axle, that could make some sense - having such a motor/axle set developed would mean they could also later release a sportier one with the 320hp motor on both axles = i-pace SVR. Would be bang on the money for a Tesla equivalent.. Or.. they could simply have downrated the current i-pace motors via software and fitted a smaller battery to make the car more affordable.

Apparently there is no real correlation between hp and range in an EV, it's basically down to the motor running at it's most efficient pace vs air resistance. If that's true, giving the car 100 less hp wouldn't effect the range with the same batter capacity, because you could just drive the 400hp version at the same speeds, same acceleration, to likely to achieve the same range. Whatever the power output of the motor, it's surely only the hp you use and how that makes a real difference?

The opposite tends to be true of ICE cars as larger capacity engines weigh a lot and non linear power bands means the engines are often working in a non efficient way for the travel speed accomplished. Having seen endless EV's of all levels of power output dissected, the size, and I presume therefore weight between various power output motors isn't that great. For all we know the current generation of i-pace motors are capable of far higher power output too. Say there was a software hack to give you and extra 200hp in your i-pace, providing you drive it the same as you always have done, there is no reason it would draw more current per mile from the batter than before the power output was increased.

Driven sensibly any i-pace can get from a to b and often not need more than 100-150hp.

The EV320 was mentioned in the online manual back in mid 2018 even though it obviously couldn't be ordered.
I can't remember there being many details but I'm fairly sure it was still AWD.

I have always assumed that it was originally intended to be the base S model but Jaguar upped the spec when they found out what Audi and Mercedes were planning. I did speak to one dealer who was aware that it had been on the cards.

Interestingly if I attempt to book a service online it shows my Oct 2018 SE as "ENGINE SIZE: EV320".
Has anyone else noticed that?

RichT, have you checked under the bonnet to see if you have the correct engine?

I haven't driven my car enough to book a service yet.
