2021 model Home Charging

Post by georgetom » Sun Jun 28, 2020 7:53 pm

Am l wrong or do you need a 3 phase supply to take advantage of the 11kw charging facility. In which case in the domestic situation l would guess that this applies to a very small percentage of the community, 10%, 5%, or maybe 1% of the population. I don't think that this has been made clear in the various reviews and advertising for the new model. I hope l am wrong and l can take advantage without getting a new 3 phase supply installed, no chance !

The new onboard charger can do both 1x 32 amps = 7.4kW or 3x 16 amps = 11kW.
Almost all UK homes have 1 phase - most continental homes have 3 phase.

In NL all homes build since 2010 have standard 3 phase and since 2000 a lot of new homes were already build with 3 phase.
If I want I could relatively cheap (€750-€1000) have my 1x 35amp upgraded to 3x 25amps. I didn’t as 1x 35amps better suited the MY2019 I-pace.

I suspect retrofitting 3P at home in UK will be a non-starter for most (a quick search suggests it could easily cost £10k+). Maybe it could be useful at offices though, e.g. allow more cars to recharge in a day.

Does the new 3P feature on the MY21 car help when you're charging away from home in UK (e.g. for Tesla destination chargers)?

Unless you can come up with a study, that statement is completely false. In France, 3 phase is uncommon, as it is (to my knowledge) in Germany. Same in Belgium, where it’s even weirder: you might get 3 phases, but without a Neutral line, which makes it unusable for most 3 phase appliances.

https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/elect ... e-and-cost

These guys claim to do it in the UK, for £1500 - £6000

My understanding is that 3 phase runs down the street, and 4 or so houses will be on each phase, at 240v - single phase.

So basically you need to cable from the street, to your house - in most circumstances not impossible.

But then you would really need a 25KW rapid charger, to see any difference?

All homes in Germany have 3 phases. All public AC chargers in Europe have 3 phases.
My home charger has 3 phases with 20 amps per phase resulting in 4.6 kW for the 1 phase charger in the I-Pace. A 3 phase charger in the I-Pace would cut down my charging time from ~18h to ~8.5h for a full charge (3*16amps)!
Same situation in Austria and Netherlands.
The 1phase charger was the biggest sales blocking point for the I-Pace in Germany, as you cannot even do a full charge over night due to the 20 amp limit.
Also: all Tesla, eTron, Taycan, ZOE can do 3 phase charging!

Not sure of this will work as don't know all the technical details, but could those wanting 3ph, get a single to 3ph convertor? I had one 20 years or more ago for running some machinery, it was a lot bigger box than these, but it did work OK and did the job. Might be different with charging situations however?

It's not that easy ...
If you are willing to spend close to €5000,- you'll get a working "3 phase to DC converter" for cars.

There are other models available as well with similar price tags.

It seems this 11kW upgrade is of little benefit to UK, however if the next upgrade is 22kW that would be a big improvement as there are quite a few of these AC chargers around. Does anyone know if there is a 22kW ac to CCS dc adapter available?

forget that I just noticed the previous post....... expensive adapter!

.. and sit down and relax before you see the price tag for this one...

Cables come extra! Have fun!

I do completely agree with you on the 22kW upgrade. However, I think JLR could not take this step as a 22kW AC charger requires more space (than they had available) in the car, more cooling, more weight, more costs ... etc.
