USB power when the car is off

Post by KevinPeters » Thu Jun 18, 2020 2:22 pm

Hi all, I need to set up a USB-powered camera in my car for a little project I want to do. I tried yesterday, but I found the car turned off the power to the USB socket under the climate controls after about a minute.

Apart from leaving the car on, does anyone have any ideas as to how I can maintain power? My USB power bank only last 4 hours so it won't work.

I would try out the 12V Auxiliary Power sockes with an USB charge adapter:

I did not try which of those will stay on, but the warning in the manual indicates, that they drain the 12V battery of the car.

All the auxiliary sockets seem to lose power when the car is locked. I wanted to leave a 12V cool box running in the boot while stopping for an hour or so, but can't see how to do it. The power consumption only averages about 10W, so it shouldn't drain the 12V battery too quickly.

Land Rover & Range Rover vehicles have the Auxiliary Sockets on a delayed switch off too. Owners of these vehicles who need to run a 12 Volt portable refrigerator for camping trips, can use a well known modification.

The LR & RR Aux sockets are fed via a Fuse Box mounted relay. The mod is to remove this relay and fit a shorting link with female crimp lug ends from the 12V Supply terminal to the relay Output terminal. Webasto / Waeco refrigerators have a built in low volts release for peace of mind to preserve the 12 volt battery to restart the vehicle.

I do not know if the I-Pace has a similar Aux isolating relay, but I would expect that one would be located near to the Aux fuses.
