Zappi no longer charging on timed boost

Post by jgm » Mon Apr 15, 2019 11:35 am

Last week my i-Pace's infotainment panel died and required a JLR technician to come out and reboot it. The infotainment is now working again, but I now have a very troubling issue.

I have a Zappi set up with a timed boost 00:30 to 04:30 (on Octopus Go tariff which gives me cheap electricity at that time) which was working fine to charge my i-Pace overnight. However, since the reboot I wake up in the morning to find the car has not been charged. The panel on the Zappi says "charging delayed" but there is no other information I can use to work out what's going on.

This isn't a problem with the Zappi (I also have an i3s and it continues to charge fine overnight when I plug it in). And if I plug it in to start charging immediately it works (but of course I'm paying 4x the price for electricity).

Has anyone seen this issue, or have any idea what to do about it? I have the i-Pace booked in to a JLR dealer to take a look at, but I worry that they will plug it in to their (non-timed) charge point, see it charging, and say it isn't their problem.

(Related to this, does the i-Pace have any sort of charging log I can look at?)

Yeah, I have noticed the same behaviour with my Wallbox Pulsar. Something in a recent update (either S19A or H193v2) changed the car’s behaviour when plugged in. It used to continue looking for a charge for about 4 hours, allowing you to delay charging start by up to that amount of time. But now it almost stops looking instantly if no power is supplied. I’m experimenting with a few solutions. I think I have it pinned down but I need to test my latest theory tonight. If it works, I’ll post details.

I have a Zappi but haven't tried it on a timed charge yet.
I can try and set one on mine tonight when i get home if you like and see what it does overnight (My car was updated at the dealers last week so has the latest FW and it wont matter if it doesn't charge overnight)

There are some compatibility options on the Zappi that seem to affect how cars "wait" for charge - can't remember them off the top of my head unfortunately.

Zappi has been happily charging my i-Pace for a couple of months on the timed basis, it's only since the JLR tech came and rebooted the car that it is no longer behaving.

I'm on 18C; meant to be upgraded next week but given that it was working it seems strange (and downright rubbish) that it's stopped now. Very frustrating.

Whilst I was speaking to MyEnergi tech support earlier this month he mentioned that latest IPace software appeared to cause this problem. They had had Jaguar rep visit but didn't think Jaguar were up to speed and software was now non-compliant with charging standard protocols.

I’m part way through my test and so far so good. I think I’ll have a solution for this tomorrow (but I’ve probably just jinxed it).

Will be great to hear if you've found a way to make it work (again).

Ok this looks like it worked for me, I did have my Zappi turned down to only deliver 2-3Kw rather than the full 7Kw but I don't think that would make any difference.
On the Zappi screen under "Readings" it delivered approx. 6kwh over 4 hours 28seconds.
My Boost Timer was set to start at 00:30 for 4 hours.

Also when I went to the car this morning it was still plugged in and waiting to charge after the Zappi shut off power at 04:30 , I was able to hit manual boost to set the Zappi supplying power again and the car started to accept it without issue,

I am on FW In control S19A_19.07.02-312706 & 14.2 telematics (Car was update at the dealers last week)

!Update!
Forgot to mention I think I had my preferred charge time on the car set to 00:00 - 23:45 according to the app with no departure time set

You can find my solution in the post linked below. Be sure to read Doug’s post at the start of the thread and then skip to mine on page 3 for the full method of controlling timed charging.
