Android Auto

Post by ardevd » Wed Mar 13, 2019 10:27 pm

Hi there.

Android Auto is an advertised feature for the I-Pace but JLr has retroactively decided to disable it in vehicles sold in certain countries where Android Auto is not officially distributed through Google Play. Here in Norway the first vehicles delivered had Android Auto enabled but this was later removed by the dealers without any explanation. I contacted my dealer after hearing about this to inquire about the situation. It took me several days of back and forth before I could even talk to anyone who knew what Android Auto was. They blamed it first on my phone not supporting Android Auto but after I made them try it themselves they eventually gave up and asked JLR directly.

The answer I finally got back was that JLR has decided that in order to minimize confusion, they hide Android Auto in Touch Pro Duo in certain markets where it's not officially supported.

I'm urging anyone with any sort of influence at JLR to reconsider this. Let those of us with Android Auto sporting devices use it with our I-Paces. We paid for the smartphone pack too you know with the dealer promising Android Auto.

If nothing else, at least let willing customers contact their dealer to have Android Auto functionality restored.

As far as I know there are no other manufacturer that has chosen to opt for this unnecessary restriction.

Same for me. Being uncertain about JLRs infotainment, the AA seemed like a safe haven. I tried it in the demo car i borrowed in september and it worked brilliant. Must say I was really disappointed when I got my car and it wasnt there. My wife has an Ampera-e and AA or Carplay is the only navi in that car. It is superior to the JLR-navigation in all aspect.

Unfortunately, they have since removed the advertisement for Android Auto here in Norway. :/

Does it still support Apple CarPlay in regions it doesn’t support Android Auto?

Not sure if it would work, but.....

Instead of putting your SIM card in the car, why not buy a cheap second hand Apple phone that supports CarPlay. Put the SIM card in that and plug it into the car to provide Apple CarPlay? Also, turn on the hotspot in the phone and connected the car to it using WiFi?

I have CarPlay and Android Auto in my car. CarPlay is the superior interface.

Your Android phone should still be able to connect using Bluetooth, so you don’t lose your standard phone capabilities.

Not the worst idea in the world, but still a bit ridiculous when Android Auto was promised and even enabled on the first cars delivered here in Norway. Then JLR decided that was a mistake and retroactively removed it. Shame on them.

What if you drive to a region that does support Android Auto - you'd want to use it there. Car should be region agnostic.
