First Drive Initial thoughts...

I collected my new i-Pace HSE yesterday and although I've not yet had much of a chance to drive it (30 miles so far) I am really impressed. Initial thoughts are as follows:

Good Points:
- Instant acceleration is a game change when driving around a busy city centre and needing to force into gaps
- The interior is (mostly) well laid out and has a genuinely premium feel to it
- Configurability of all the screens is great
- Menus are largely intuitive and although there is some lag it is vastly improved from other JLR products I've owned
- Charging is very straight forward
- Sound system is pretty good
- Smart Climate is a nice touch and something I've wanted for a long time
- ApplePlay is brilliant
- Artificial sound is gimmicky but I like it
- Bonnet storage is perfect for the charging cable which is useful
- Steering wheel is great (so many car makers get it wrong)

Bad Points:
- Would be useful to be able to set the side camera option as a quick setting on the steering wheel
- Gear selector buttons and hazard warning button are from the original XF and feel cheap
- Climate dials feel very cheap and are not intuitive
- Gap in the bottom of the centre console is asking for a Cup Holder, I could then use the tray cup-holder cover for my phone
- There should be a designed cable route for phone charging cables from the armrest though to where the phone sits in the cupholder slot
- Cupholders do not have the same quality feel as much of the interior

Overall I'm really pleased and being super-picky, but the bad points would be so easy to fix which is always frustrating. Really looking forward to driving this car on some longer journeys and having the chance to have a proper play.

Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts. OVerall, the car is very, very good but some minor (to me but not to others) things do spoil the party.
I've been travelling in mine for 6 days (1150 miles) now and don't have any real issues apart from the variability of Chargeplace Scotland chargers to work with the I-Pace. I'm charging now at Maybole (goshdarnit's home territory) and it does work fine as does the one just down the road in Girvan (30p to spend a penny though)

Oh the topic of interior, the volume dial feels so cheap, in fact all the steering wheel buttons look and feel cheap.

And the pedals... VW put sports pedals in their 30k golf...

And the lack to electric steering wheel adjust...

I like the steering wheel buttons :)
Comming from the Evoque, in the I Pace, the steering wheel button are a dream.
I have a 2013 Evoque and at first thought the left hand scroller was a fiddle and the right hand side toggler was daft...

Now I agree, they are far better than in the Evoque... :)

I really like the steering wheel buttons. And one huge advantage that doesn't get discussed much is the fact that because they are screens, the markings won't wear off over time like I have seen on many cars with "painted on" button symbols.

On the point about the phone cable, one thing I like is that they cut a "slot" under the lid of the armrest so that you can feed the phone cable through it to the cup holder area. I thought that showed attention to detail. I think you're asking for a route coming through from underneath? That becomes cumbersome if two people with different phones regularly use the car though. I like how they implemented the phone cable slot but I guess it's all personal taste.
